Starting in the mid nineteen sixties Robert Gumpertz gained notoriety as a cartoonist when his work appeared in Playboy, Paris Match, The New York Times, Penthouse, London's Punch and the Sunday section of the San Francisco Chronicle. He lived and worked in Paris and New York and now makes his home in Marin County, California. While his commercial work as a cartoonist and illustrator was appearing world wide, he started producing fine art drawings and small paintings. In the early nineteen nineties he began painting full time, producing a body of work, mostly figures and faces. Making the transition from cartoonist to painter came about naturally with his love of color and texture. "I can do things on canvas, or wood, or paper, that take me beyond the commercial world. I still do some cartoon work for publications now and again, and I still love the world of the cartoon, but painting offers me a chance to go beyond the limits of a small space and let my imagination soar. My faces and figures represent just about every face and figure I have ever seen, or dreamed about. Painting is so visceral, so exciting, that I know I'll keep painting more extraordinary faces and figures, and keep exploring all avenues open to me. Copyright © RGumpertz2004 |
