"Writing and illustrating books with a combination of painting and cartooning is the best of all possible worlds. I still love the world of the cartoon, and with books, I can use my artwork to tell stories. Sometimes the characters in the story come first, sometimes the story comes first--chicken or egg, it's a grand way to share my imagination, experience and interests with children and their parents.

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS

The Adventures of Trina and the Great Barrett
Eleven-year-old Trina steals a ride on the back of the Great Barrett, a very large bird. Though he would much rather stay in his comfortable home, together they are destined for adventure. Trina and the Great Barrett are captured by evil Shaggies and held in a cave prison before escaping into a storm of rose petals. They encounter the Dancing Sand Band (complete with flute, lute and burtlephone), a gaggle of confused but helpful owls, cloud-scraping machines, rare jewels, hypnotized butterflies and a not-so-scary Drogon-not-a-dragon among fanciful friends, vile enemies and bizarre situations along the way. Their final destination, to discover why all the colors of the earth are disappearing, leads to a dramatic battle with a colorful conclusion.
This is a wonderful book about friendship, courage and loyalty for young readers, set in a truly unique world. Author and illustrator Robert Gumpertz’ work is reminiscent of Roald Dahl, but with a unique voice and vision. This book is available in print (Amazon.com) and E-book versions from Amazon, Smashwords and Barnes & Noble.

Frankie at the Bus Stop
Frankie waits patiently at the bus stop; instead of his usual bus, he's offered something altogether different: a spaceship ride! Friendly aliens, evil creatures, burping whales and all sorts of adventures befall Frankie in this tale told completely in pictures. Well-known artist and author Robert Gumpertz continues the story of Frankie ("Frankie at the Seashore") in this imaginative tale, suitable for English- and non-English-speakers of all ages. This book is available in print (Amazon.com) and E-book versions from Amazon, Smashwords and Barnes & Noble.

Way to Go
When the author was diagnosed with cancer in 1995, he panicked--then made himself laugh by picturing silly ways "to end it all". This cartoon book is full of hilariously idiotic, foolish and funny ways to do just that. The author got help, started an organization for fellow survivors, and, more than a decade later, is still laughing.
This book is available in print (Amazon.com) and E-book versions from Amazon, Smashwords and Barnes & Noble.
